Self-renouncement of air travel

Voluntary commitment to avoiding short-haul flights

Domestic and international business trips are a central part of scientific work and it is impossible to imagine research without them. Although they are so enriching and important, and contribute to scientific understanding and problem solving, the CO₂ emissions of the associated travel represent a significant burden on the climate.

Therefore, the decision to go on a business trip should not only be based on the criteria of distance, feasibility and cost, but also take into account the CO₂ emissions caused by the trip. Here, public transport such as bus and train offer significantly lower emissions than travelling by car or a flight.

Opting for air travel in particular leads to drastic CO₂ pollution compared to other means of transport.

Short-haul flights, in particular, should be avoided in favor of travel by train. On average, more than 85% of the emissions of a corresponding flight can be saved in Germany. Avoiding short-haul flights is therefore a first step towards more climate protection in this area. This is how scientists contribute to climate protection.

With this declaration, the signatories commit themselves to avoid, as far as possible, flights whose destinations can be reached in less than 10 hours by alternative means of transport.

The University of Bayreuth wants to fulfil its role as a social pioneer in the change towards a more sustainable future. To do this, it relies in many areas on the individual commitment of its employees, who lead the way as good examples. With their commitment to environmental protection, employees make an important contribution that is recognised and appreciated by the University of Bayreuth.

If there has to be a deviation from this waiver due to special individual circumstances, this is not to be understood as a contradiction.
